I feel a little woozy about stepping into these recursive depths and potentially modifying things adjacent to the serialization logic.
I'm trying to do minimal damage to the existing digest computation/serialization API -- ideally in a non-breaking way. The result is maybe a little less elegant, though: lots and lots of default values being assumed (harder to catch bugs). Depending on our stomach for making breaking changes, that could be lessened.
